Ventilation a powerful aid in COVID prevention toolbox

Source: https://canada.constructconnect.com/joc/news/ohs/2021/10/ventilation-a-powerful-aid-in-covid-prevention-toolbox

Ventilation can be a powerful tool in preventing the spread of COVID-19, especially as inclement weather sets in and construction workers are in closer quarters or warming stations.
Conditions are especially challenging for construction industry as it deals with shielded or partially constructed buildings when weather is a consideration to renovations that have an operating HVAC systems in place. Authorities point out that finding the right ventilation protocol will depend on the building site and that ventilation is only another layer in the defence against the virus spread. Yet, it remains an important facet.

At this stage of reopening, many Torontonians are obviously thrilled they finally have the chance to get back to the gym, yoga studio, local bar, and other bricks and mortar spaces.

And then there are the rest. After over a year of avoiding the indoors except for necessities, it still just feels a little weird to some to lower your mask inside, whether it’s on the treadmill or at the bar.

Connection between aerosol transmission and COVID-19 dynamics

Source: https://www.news-medical.net/news/20211005/Connection-between-aerosol-transmission-and-COVID-19-dynamics.aspx

Superspreading events and overdispersion are characteristics of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, similar to other outbreaks of respiratory viruses. Here, the term “superspreading” refers to any event that leads to more than the average number of secondary transmissions. In the context of communicable diseases, “overdispersion” implies a non-random pattern of clustering, involving a large number of zero cases and a small number of larger outbreaks. At individual-level variation, superspreading events present as overdispersion in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmissions, with 10-20% of index cases responsible for 80% of secondary cases. Hence, understanding the nature and characteristics of superspreading events is a key to comprehending and predicting SARS-CoV-2 spread.
