COVID-19 pandemic still hitting low income areas hardest, Ontario’s science table says

Source: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontario-covid-19-science-table-low-income-neighbourhoods-hardest-hit-pandemic-1.6390882

Low income areas in Ontario have borne the brunt of COVID-19 in every single wave of the pandemic, the latest data from the province shows.
In new modelling released on Thursday, the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table says this finding was evident even in the fifth wave fuelled by the Omicron variant.

Air hygiene: how re-thinking air quality will help protect us from this and the next pandemic

Source: https://theconversation.com/air-hygiene-how-re-thinking-air-quality-will-help-protect-us-from-this-and-the-next-pandemic-177131

Our complacency about indoor air contributed to our vulnerability to COVID-19, and we’ll continue to be vulnerable to COVID and other emerging threats until we re-think how we share our air.

Calls grow for Alberta to recognize aerosol transmission of COVID-19

Source: https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/calls-grow-for-alberta-to-recognize-aerosol-transmission-of-covid-19-1.5697621

CALGARY – Alberta’s healthcare system still believes it is “not clear” what role aerosol transmission plays in the spread of the COVID-19 virus for distances greater than two metres.
Alberta Health says aerosol transmission is not a predominant mode of transmission except for health care settings, when performing aerosol generating medical procedures (AGMPs) and during specific circumstances in community settings.
That is information the province has relied on since November 2020.

Some ventilation upgrades at B.C. hospitals as health minister addresses COVID-19 outbreaks

Source: https://bc.ctvnews.ca/some-ventilation-upgrades-at-b-c-hospitals-as-health-minister-addresses-covid-19-outbreaks-1.5696416

VANCOUVER – The minister of health and his staff have provided some new information on B.C.’s response to COVID-19 outbreaks in hospitals, but many of the details remain hazy, including how many hospitals saw improved ventilation as a result.
Since the start of the pandemic, at least 1,619 people likely caught COVID-19 in the province’s hospitals, and at least 274 of them died. The provincial health officer insisted there are fewer outbreaks now due to vaccinations, but also improvements in ventilation systems.

COVID-19 is airborne. Why is this so controversial?

Source: https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/covid-19-is-airborne-why-is-this-so-controversial-1.5743949

It was mid-December when some of Ontario’s top doctors publicly told reporters that COVID-19 is airborne.
For nearly two years public health officials in Canada have shied away from using that term to describe how the novel coronavirus is spread. Instead, the focus has been on preventing the spread of the virus via droplets.

With COVID-19, Air Is Both the Problem and the Solution

Source: https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/covid-19/covid-19-air-both-problem-and-solution

On March 28, 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) tweeted out, “FACT: #COVID19 is NOT airborne.”
For medical doctors and biomedical scientists (including me), this made sense. Few diseases were known to be airborne.
But to aerosol scientists, this was both puzzling and infuriating.
Over the next two years, the WHO and other organizations that had initially denied that the new coronavirus could stay in the air and move around like smoke quietly changed their stance.

Lambton COVID-19 cases climb, provincial mitigation measures announced

Bluewater Health’s decision to pause all but urgent and emergent surgeries and procedures will remain in place until at least Jan. 26. Ontario announced Monday a provincewide delay, beginning Wednesday, on similar surgeries and procedures at all hospitals as part of a suite of measures to help curb the rapid rise of Omicron-variant COVID-19 cases. Bluewater Health independently implemented similar restrictions last week amid rising case counts and the resultant pressure on hospital resources.
Those restrictions will continue amid the provincial announcement, a spokesperson said.

Epidemiologist says COVID-19 is airborne and it’s time to rethink measures Social Sharing

Source: https://www.dallasnews.com/business/autos/2021/11/26/ready-for-air-taxis/

An epidemiologist with the University of Toronto says COVID-19 is airborne and it’s time for New Brunswick and other governments to accept it.
Colin Furness contends governments have been in denial.
“In Ontario, it was suggested this week, perhaps COVID might be in the air. That’s a big step forward. But until we actually confront the reality, we’re going to continue to bring a knife to a gunfight.”
