Alberta not adopting federal messaging shift on airborne COVID-19 spread

Source: https://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/alberta-response-to-airborne-covid-19-transmission

Alberta is updating its mask-use guidelines in the light of a recent messaging shift from Canada’s top doctor on the risk of airborne spread of COVID-19, but the province is otherwise continuing to use a year-old document which considers aerosol virus transmission to be a non-dominant form of spread. Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, said in mid-November that respiratory aerosols — microscopic airborne particles which can carry SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 — can linger in air much like smoke , underlining the importance of mask use and ventilation in indoor spaces as virus mitigation measures.

‘A really big deal’: U of T’s Colin Furness on why ventilation is key to fighting COVID-19

Source: https://www.utoronto.ca/news/really-big-deal-u-t-s-colin-furness-why-ventilation-key-fighting-covid-19

As the weather turns colder and people move indoors, the University of Toronto’s Colin Furness is emphasizing the importance of proper ventilation to combat the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.
The expert in infection control epidemiology and COVID-19 pandemic management says it’s well-established in the medical community that airborne transmission is major contributor to the spread SARS‑CoV‑2. But he notes that public health regulations have often been slow to catch up, leaving many businesses and other organizations with less-than-optimal safeguards.

It may all feel a bit grey and gloomy but there are ways to dwell well. You have no control over the chilly temps and lack of sunlight, but you can make your indoor space happier and healthier and brighter. Interior designer Sarah Walker is an expert at making indoor spaces as healthy as they are beautiful. Wellness-focused interiors combine not only decor and furniture placement, but enhance air quality too.

“We already spent 90% of our time indoors pre-pandemic, and that number unquestionably went up during lockdowns,” says Walker, of thecuratedhouse.com.

With better awareness of aerosols, mask-wearing shouldn’t end soon, experts say

Source: https://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/with-better-awareness-of-aerosols-mask-wearing-shouldnt-end-soon-experts-say

Canada’s chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, issued a series of tweets and public health messages last weekend detailing how COVID-19 is spread via fine aerosols lingering in the air. She likened it to a cloud of second-hand smoke that floats in a room unseen, with the potential to contaminate inhabitants long after the person who brought in the disease has departed.
For many in the scientific community, the announcements came as validation of arguments they’ve made for months that health officials have downplayed the importance of transmission via aerosols.

Message shift on airborne transmission of COVID-19 seen as positive — but late

Source: https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/message-shift-on-airborne-transmission-of-covid-19-seen-as-positive-but-late

Twenty-two months into the pandemic, there is something new in the air: a heightened emphasis by the Public Health Agency of Canada that COVID-19 can spread through the air, like second-hand smoke. As far back as last November, PHAC quietly acknowledged that COVID-19 could be spread through the air and not just through droplets. But it offered little or no advice about what that would mean to the way people and institutions prevent transmission, critics say.

Canadians looking for guidance on how to reduce their risk of COVID-19 indoors this winter may be feeling left out in the cold. The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) now recommends opening windows to increase ventilation and using HEPA filters to clean indoor air, but it stops short of advocating for better-quality masks or saying outright that the virus is primarily airborne.

Hospitals see influx of children with COVID-19 as Alberta battles 5th wave

Source: https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/curbing-air-pollution-could-prevent-millions-of-deaths-in-north-america-over-next-50-years-1.6232730

As Omicron cases surge in Alberta, so does the number of children hospitalized with COVID-19.According to Alberta Health, 43 of the 1,007 COVID patients in hospital Monday were under the age of 18. That included eight who were in intensive care.
Those figures are up from last Friday, when 30 youngsters were hospitalized and four were in the ICU.
And it’s at least double the number seen in previous waves, according to Dr. Jim Kellner, pediatric infectious disease specialist at Alberta Children’s Hospital.
“We have more children in hospital now than with any of the previous waves,” said Kellner, who also teaches in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary.

Ventilation a powerful aid in COVID prevention toolbox

Source: https://canada.constructconnect.com/joc/news/ohs/2021/10/ventilation-a-powerful-aid-in-covid-prevention-toolbox

Ventilation can be a powerful tool in preventing the spread of COVID-19, especially as inclement weather sets in and construction workers are in closer quarters or warming stations.
Conditions are especially challenging for construction industry as it deals with shielded or partially constructed buildings when weather is a consideration to renovations that have an operating HVAC systems in place. Authorities point out that finding the right ventilation protocol will depend on the building site and that ventilation is only another layer in the defence against the virus spread. Yet, it remains an important facet.

Why a top notch air exchanger is way more effective than Plexiglas when it comes to good ventilation

At this stage of reopening, many Torontonians are obviously thrilled they finally have the chance to get back to the gym, yoga studio, local bar, and other bricks and mortar spaces.

And then there are the rest. After over a year of avoiding the indoors except for necessities, it still just feels a little weird to some to lower your mask inside, whether it’s on the treadmill or at the bar.

Connection between aerosol transmission and COVID-19 dynamics

Source: https://www.news-medical.net/news/20211005/Connection-between-aerosol-transmission-and-COVID-19-dynamics.aspx

Superspreading events and overdispersion are characteristics of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, similar to other outbreaks of respiratory viruses. Here, the term “superspreading” refers to any event that leads to more than the average number of secondary transmissions. In the context of communicable diseases, “overdispersion” implies a non-random pattern of clustering, involving a large number of zero cases and a small number of larger outbreaks. At individual-level variation, superspreading events present as overdispersion in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmissions, with 10-20% of index cases responsible for 80% of secondary cases. Hence, understanding the nature and characteristics of superspreading events is a key to comprehending and predicting SARS-CoV-2 spread.
