Ventilators and COVID-19: What You Need to Know

Source: https://www.yalemedicine.org/news/ventilators-covid-19

A Yale Medicine expert explains how mechanical ventilation works and why it may be necessary for some patients with COVID-19.
The COVID-19 pandemic has cast a spotlight on ventilators—but few know much about what they do or how they work.
A ventilator pumps air—usually with extra oxygen—into patients’ airways when they are unable to breathe adequately on their own. If lung function has been severely impaired—due to injury or an illness such as COVID-19—patients may need a ventilator. It is also used to support breathing during surgery.

A nonthermal plasma field can eliminate 99.9% of airborne viruses

Source: https://www.freethink.com/health/nonthermal-plasma-field?amp=1/

The scientists blended in with the Michigan snow — white jumpsuits, white hoods, white face masks, periwinkle surgical gloves — as they set up their device outside of the Barton family pig farm.
The team’s device is designed to kill airborne viruses on the wing, funneling them through a field of nonthermal plasma that inactivates the majority of them, leaving them unable to infect their target cells. And while they were not able to generate enough viruses in the air to test their device at Barton, the lab results looked promising.

Cold Plasma, a New Hope in the Field of Virus Inactivation

Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7164895/

Viruses can infect all cell-based organisms, from bacteria to humans, animals, and plants. They are responsible for numerous cases of hospitalization, many deaths, and widespread crop destruction, all of which result in an enormous medical, economical, and biological burden. Each of the currently used decontamination methods has important drawbacks. Cold plasma (CP) has entered this field as a novel, efficient, and clean solution for virus inactivation. We present recent developments in this promising field of CP-mediated virus inactivation, and describe the applications and mechanisms of the inactivation. This is particularly relevant because viral pandemics, such as COVID-19, highlight the need for alternative virus inactivation methods to replace, complement, or upgrade existing procedures.

Why Ventilation Should Be Separate From Heating and Cooling Systems

Source: https://www.zehnderamerica.com/why-ventilation-should-be-separate-from-heating-and-cooling-systems/

We often get asked if our HRVs and ERVs can be coupled with a building’s heating and cooling system. It makes sense, right? If there is already a system of ducts in place for the furnace and or air conditioning system, why have a second parallel system? While it may be less expensive to combine the two systems together and it may save a little space, the project is better served by having independent systems that each focus on their task. This blog entry will explain the reasoning why. Note that for simplicity in writing I will use “HRV” to represent either an HRV or ERV system and “air handler” to represent a furnace, air conditioning system, heat pump etc – whatever forced-air system is meeting the heating and cooling needs of the building.
