Plasma electrolysers will cut the cost of green hydrogen by a factor of three

Source: https://www.rechargenews.com/energy-transition/-our-plasma-electrolysers-will-cut-the-cost-of-green-hydrogen-by-a-factor-of-three-/2-1-1032895

An Australian start-up says it has invented a new super-efficient type of electrolyser that uses plasma, the fourth state of matter, to reduce the cost of green hydrogen by a factor of three.
Melbourne-based Hydrogen Systems Australia (HSA) says that today’s PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolysers produce hydrogen at a levelised cost of about $5-7 per kilogram, while its new plasma electrolysers would produce H2 for $2/kg by 2024 (based on a power price of $35/MWh when operating for 12 hours a day) — and could go even lower after that.

A nonthermal plasma field can eliminate 99.9% of airborne viruses

Source: https://www.freethink.com/health/nonthermal-plasma-field?amp=1/

The scientists blended in with the Michigan snow — white jumpsuits, white hoods, white face masks, periwinkle surgical gloves — as they set up their device outside of the Barton family pig farm.
The team’s device is designed to kill airborne viruses on the wing, funneling them through a field of nonthermal plasma that inactivates the majority of them, leaving them unable to infect their target cells. And while they were not able to generate enough viruses in the air to test their device at Barton, the lab results looked promising.

Lightning Has Powerful Air Cleaning Properties, Surprising Analysis Reveals

Source: https://www.sciencealert.com/study-shows-how-lightning-actually-helps-earth-s-atmosphere-clean-itself/

Lightning could be a much more important atmospheric cleanser than previously thought, according to a new analysis of historical measurements gathered from a storm-chasing airplane back in 2012 – data which were originally thought to be inaccurate.
While some of the air-scrubbing qualities of lightning bolts are already well understood – in particular the creation of nitric oxide and hydroxide that can flush out various greenhouse gases from the sky – there’s a lot more going on here, according to the new research.

Cold Plasma, a New Hope in the Field of Virus Inactivation

Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7164895/

Viruses can infect all cell-based organisms, from bacteria to humans, animals, and plants. They are responsible for numerous cases of hospitalization, many deaths, and widespread crop destruction, all of which result in an enormous medical, economical, and biological burden. Each of the currently used decontamination methods has important drawbacks. Cold plasma (CP) has entered this field as a novel, efficient, and clean solution for virus inactivation. We present recent developments in this promising field of CP-mediated virus inactivation, and describe the applications and mechanisms of the inactivation. This is particularly relevant because viral pandemics, such as COVID-19, highlight the need for alternative virus inactivation methods to replace, complement, or upgrade existing procedures.

Automated Trucks Are Coming Much Sooner Than You Think

Source: https://interestingengineering.com/automated-trucks-are-coming-much-sooner-than-you-think

This trial was a key milestone because all the other companies that are conducting driverless tests made sure to have at least one human in the car during the ride. While this might sound like a fun and exciting futuristic development, it does have one group of people worried: truck drivers.
I wasn’t aware ’til I ran across one on the Florida Turnpike and that just– it just scares me. I can’t imagine. But I didn’t know anything about it, truck driver Linda Allen told 60 minutes.
The other truck drivers also interviewed by 60 minutes explained that no one in their industry talks about the new autonomous trucks, leaving them unaware of how advanced the technology has become.

Astra will launch a rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida for the first time in January

Source: https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/04/sustainable-microgrids-are-the-future-of-clean-energy/

Across the U.S., sustainable microgrids are emerging as a vital tool in the fight against climate change and increasingly common natural disasters. In the wake of hurricanes, earthquakes and wildfires, the traditional energy grid in many parts of the country is struggling to keep the power flowing, causing outages that slow local economies and ultimately put lives at risk.

Blasting ‘Forever’ Chemicals Out of the Water with a Blast of Cold Plasma

Source: https://drexel.edu/now/archive/2020/February/cold-plasma-PFAS-water-treatment/

Researchers from Drexel University have found a way to destroy stubbornly resilient toxic compounds, ominously dubbed “forever chemicals,” that have contaminated the drinking water of millions across the United States.
These chemicals, commonly called PFAS — a shortening of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, were used for some 60 years as coatings for nonstick pans and waterproof clothing and in fire-fighting foams. In the last two decades concerns about health risks associated with exposure to PFAS — from cancer and thyroid problems to low birthweights and high blood pressure — have led to federal bans, monitoring mandates and massive remediation efforts.

Global Electric Bus Adoption to Triple by 2025

Source: https://www.woodmac.com/our-expertise/focus/Power–Renewables/ebus-landscape-2019/?utm_source=gtmarticle&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=wmpr_ebus2019

In the last decade, policymakers around the world have offered incentives to transit authorities and school districts in the form of direct and partial funding, credits and long-term mandates. The incentives promote electric buses and increase the industry’s exposure to the technology as costs continue to come down. These policies have made the greatest dent in China, which hosts nearly 400,000 e-buses and accounts for 98% of the global e-bus stock. North America and Europe are piloting and testing equipment, but also have significant heavy-duty clean transportation targets beyond 2020. This report provides forecasts for e-bus and e-bus charging infrastructure sales, the e-bus and charging competitive landscape, and current market size for China, Europe and North America.

Device could bring both solar power and clean water to millions

Source: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2019/jul/09/device-bring-both-solar-power-clean-water-to-millions?utm_term=RWRpdG9yaWFsX0dyZWVuTGlnaHQtMTkwNzEy&utm_source=esp&utm_medium=Email

A device that can produce electricity from sunlight while simultaneously purifying water has been produced by researchers, an invention they say could solve two problems in one stroke.
The researchers say the device is not only a source of green energy but also offers an alternative to current technologies for purifying water. These, they add, often consume large amounts of electricity and require infrastructure beyond the reach of many communities that lack basic access to safe drinking water – a situation thought to affect more than 780 million people worldwide.

Self-driving trucks begin mail delivery test for U.S. Postal Service

Source: https://mobile-reuters-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKCN1SR0YB?amp_js_v=a2&amp_gsa=1

The U.S. Postal Service on Tuesday started a two-week test transporting mail across three Southwestern states using self-driving trucks, a step forward in the effort to commercialize autonomous vehicle technology for hauling freight.
San Diego-based startup TuSimple said its self-driving trucks will begin hauling mail between USPS facilities in Phoenix and Dallas to see how the nascent technology might improve delivery times and costs. A safety driver will sit behind the wheel to intervene if necessary and an engineer will ride in the passenger seat.
If successful, it would mark an achievement for the autonomous driving industry and a possible solution to the driver shortage and regulatory constraints faced by freight haulers across the country.
