Diesel giant Cummins makes $3.7B bet on an electric truck future with players like the Tesla Semi

Source: https://www.teslarati.com/cummins-3-7-billion-electric-truck-bet-tesla-semi/

It seems like one the most notable vanguards of diesel engines has begun preparations for an upcoming Tesla-like disruption in the trucking sector. In a recent press release, diesel engine giant Cummins announced that it was acquiring Meritor, a company that makes drivetrain, mobility, braking, aftermarket, and electric powertrain solutions for commercial vehicle and industrial markets. The deal is valued at approximately $3.7 billion.

This California startup wants to be the Pony Express of electric trucking

Source: https://www.canarymedia.com/articles/electric-vehicles/this-california-startup-wants-to-be-the-pony-express-of-electric-trucking

Salim Youssefzadeh, CEO of Los Angeles-area startup WattEV, has a plan to bring electric trucking to Southern California, one that merges novel technologies with much older logistics models — including the Pony Express.
Here’s the pitch: First, build enormous electric truck-charging hubs in three major freight transport centers in Southern California. Procure electric trucks from major manufacturers such as Volvo and Tesla, and establish partnerships with companies that want to move their freight on those trucks.

Flying Taxi Company Joby Aviation Goes Public While Touting Itself as ‘Uber of the Air’

Source: https://gizmodo.com/flying-taxi-company-joby-aviation-goes-public-while-tou-1847471374

Joby Aviation made its debut Wednesday as a publicly trade company on the New York Stock Exchange surging over 25% after opening at a price of $10.62. Joby is currently promising air taxi service for the public by 2024, an ambitious plan for its electric vertical-take-off and landing vehicles, known as eVTOL. What makes Joby’s air taxis better than traditional helicopters? They’re electric and they’re quieter. Otherwise, they accomplish the exact same thing as a helicopter that might carry four passengers and one pilot. How will Joby turn that into a viable business? Presumably, by targeting the wealthy with the promise of fast, TSA-free trips of 150 miles or less.

New method to build microgrids based on solar, hydrogen

Source: https://www.pv-magazine.com/2021/01/11/new-method-to-build-microgrids-based-on-solar-hydrogen/

The use of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells as backup power generation in solar microgrids could drive down costs and improve efficiency, according to an international group of researchers. They have proposed a new energy management system that could be ideal for hybrid solar-hydrogen microgrids in remote locations.
An international research team has developed a new energy management strategy to help manage oversupply in remote solar microgrids that rely on hydrogen fuel cells for backup power generation.

The roadblocks EV trucks face in modernizing the transportation sector

Source: https://www.renewableenergyworld.com/storage/the-roadblocks-ev-trucks-face-in-modernizing-the-transportation-sector/#gref/

With most major car manufacturers releasing electrical vehicle (EV) models, along with newcomers such as Tesla and NIO securing billions of dollars in investments, there remains no doubt that the EV revolution is upon us. The electrification of our transportation sector comes as good news to renewable energy advocates, environmentalists, and electric car enthusiasts. Implementing mass change across the automotive industry, however, does come with its own set of challenges such as sourcing raw materials for car batteries, safety of autonomous vehicles, electrical grid capacity, and EV charging infrastructure to name a few.

Switching From Diesel to Electric Will Seriously Affect the Grid

Source: https://www.motorbiscuit.com/switching-from-diesel-to-electric-will-seriously-affect-the-grid/

The age of the electric semi fleet is drawing near. However, we aren’t quite there yet. In fact, there are many details concerned with the adaption from the traditional diesel engine to electric trucking. It turns out that the transition from diesel to electric tractors for a cargo fleet is a massive undertaking. Switching from diesel to electric is more complicated than you may have thought.

California shakes up auto industry, says all vans and trucks must be electric by 2024

Source: https://www.nbcnews.com/business/autos/california-shakes-auto-industry-says-all-vans-trucks-must-be-n1232259/

California regulators have approved new rules that would see a massive shift from conventional gas and diesel trucks and vans to ones powered by batteries and zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells.
The first-of-their-kind guidelines, which take effect in 2024, cover a broad range of truck segments, from medium-duty models up to the “big rigs” that move vast amount of goods throughout California and across the country. Current guidelines from the California Air Resources Board already press manufacturers to add electric and hydrogen trucks to light-duty segments.

Solar hydrogen production: Splitting water with UV is now at almost 100% quantum efficiency

Source: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/06/200603104547.htm

Pour yourself a glass of water and take a look at it. This water contains an abundant source of fuel, hydrogen. Hydrogen burns clean unlike petrol-based energy products. Sound too good to be true? Scientists in Japan successfully split water into hydrogen and oxygen using light and meticulously designed catalysts, and they did so at the maximum efficiency meaning there was almost no loss and undesired side reactions. This latest breakthrough in solar hydrogen production makes the likelihood of scalable, economically viable hydrogen production more than likely, paving the way for humanity to make the switch to clean energy.
