Charging Infrastructure for Commercial Electric Trucks lags C02 Targets

Source: https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127733_charging-infrastructure-for-commercial-electric-trucks-lags-co2-targets-report-finds

Electric commercial trucks are getting more attention, with Tesla and more established truck makers like Volvo and Daimler unveiling electric models. But, in Europe at least, charging infrastructure for these vehicles is underdeveloped, according to a new report.
A “massive ramp-up” in charging infrastructure is needed to meet European CO2 emissions targets for 2025 and 2030, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), a trade group representing 16 vehicle manufacturers, said.

Massive ramp-up of truck charging and re-fuelling infrastructure needed, new data reveals

Source: https://www.acea.auto/press-release/massive-ramp-up-of-truck-charging-and-re-fuelling-infrastructure-needed-new-data-reveals/

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) has released new data on the number of charging points and re-fuelling stations required for zero- and low- emission trucks to meet the 2025 and 2030 CO2 targets. In terms of charging points for electric trucks, this means going from close to zero today to some 90,000 public points over the next decade in order to enable the transition to carbon-neutral road transport.

Automated Trucks Are Coming Much Sooner Than You Think

Source: https://interestingengineering.com/automated-trucks-are-coming-much-sooner-than-you-think

This trial was a key milestone because all the other companies that are conducting driverless tests made sure to have at least one human in the car during the ride. While this might sound like a fun and exciting futuristic development, it does have one group of people worried: truck drivers.
I wasn’t aware ’til I ran across one on the Florida Turnpike and that just– it just scares me. I can’t imagine. But I didn’t know anything about it, truck driver Linda Allen told 60 minutes.
The other truck drivers also interviewed by 60 minutes explained that no one in their industry talks about the new autonomous trucks, leaving them unaware of how advanced the technology has become.

Electric Vehicles Could Transform Energy Storage

Source: https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/Electric-Vehicles-Could-Transform-Energy-Storage.html/

Apart from driving a clean transportation revolution over the next three decades, electric vehicles (EVs) could help the power grid’s storage needs as growing shares of renewable energy sources—predominantly solar and wind—are being incorporated into electricity grids.
Batteries from EVs could have so much more potential energy storage by 2050 that electric cars could be the ones to boost the energy storage of the power grid to accommodate rising solar and wind capacity, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) says.

Microgrids: An idea whose time has come

Source: https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/what-on-earth-newsletter-microgrids-green-energy-1.5437568/

As the global population grows, so does the demand for electricity. But there are challenges, even now. More than a billion people around the world don’t have access to power grids. According to the Canada Energy Regulator, 200,000 people in Canada are not connected to the North American electrical grid and natural gas distribution pipeline systems.
We’re also seeing natural disasters and major weather events disrupt power supply, causing mass blackouts for days at a time. And when one part of the transmission system breaks down, it can paralyze the whole grid.

Global Electric Bus Adoption to Triple by 2025

Source: https://www.woodmac.com/our-expertise/focus/Power–Renewables/ebus-landscape-2019/?utm_source=gtmarticle&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=wmpr_ebus2019

In the last decade, policymakers around the world have offered incentives to transit authorities and school districts in the form of direct and partial funding, credits and long-term mandates. The incentives promote electric buses and increase the industry’s exposure to the technology as costs continue to come down. These policies have made the greatest dent in China, which hosts nearly 400,000 e-buses and accounts for 98% of the global e-bus stock. North America and Europe are piloting and testing equipment, but also have significant heavy-duty clean transportation targets beyond 2020. This report provides forecasts for e-bus and e-bus charging infrastructure sales, the e-bus and charging competitive landscape, and current market size for China, Europe and North America.

Why Electrified Transportation Needs Microgrids

Source: https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/why-electrified-transportation-needs-microgrids/

Government officials in Montgomery County, Maryland don’t have to speculate about the importance of energy resilience. In 2012 a derecho hit the mid-Atlantic, leading to the deaths of 13 people. The derecho also caused extended power outages for more than 250,000 residents, and this combined with the extremely hot temperatures led to an additional 29 deaths.

Self-driving trucks begin mail delivery test for U.S. Postal Service

Source: https://mobile-reuters-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKCN1SR0YB?amp_js_v=a2&amp_gsa=1

The U.S. Postal Service on Tuesday started a two-week test transporting mail across three Southwestern states using self-driving trucks, a step forward in the effort to commercialize autonomous vehicle technology for hauling freight.
San Diego-based startup TuSimple said its self-driving trucks will begin hauling mail between USPS facilities in Phoenix and Dallas to see how the nascent technology might improve delivery times and costs. A safety driver will sit behind the wheel to intervene if necessary and an engineer will ride in the passenger seat.
If successful, it would mark an achievement for the autonomous driving industry and a possible solution to the driver shortage and regulatory constraints faced by freight haulers across the country.

Amping Up: Charging Infrastructure for Electric Trucks

Source: https://nacfe.org/emerging-technology/electric-trucks-2/amping-up-charging-infrastructure-for-electric-trucks/

Charging infrastructure has been identified as one of the biggest unknowns and sources of anxiety for fleets considering adopting battery electric vehicles in the near term. And while there is no one-size-fits-all solution to charging, there is a roadmap that fleets considering deploying electric vehicles can follow to ensure they have a cost-effective charging strategy in place.

The Advantages of Developing Solar on Brownfields

Source: https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/the-advantages-of-developing-solar-on-brownfields#gs.57rJu3Y

When PSE&G, the largest utility in New Jersey, announces that it’s investing nearly half a billion dollars in mid-scale solar, developers in the West should take notice. Why? Because the Garden State, in addition to being blessed with rich soil, has an abundance of brownfields and landfills upon which the utility will build dozens of megawatts of new photovoltaic capacity.
