Plasma electrolysers will cut the cost of green hydrogen by a factor of three

Source: https://www.rechargenews.com/energy-transition/-our-plasma-electrolysers-will-cut-the-cost-of-green-hydrogen-by-a-factor-of-three-/2-1-1032895

An Australian start-up says it has invented a new super-efficient type of electrolyser that uses plasma, the fourth state of matter, to reduce the cost of green hydrogen by a factor of three.
Melbourne-based Hydrogen Systems Australia (HSA) says that today’s PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolysers produce hydrogen at a levelised cost of about $5-7 per kilogram, while its new plasma electrolysers would produce H2 for $2/kg by 2024 (based on a power price of $35/MWh when operating for 12 hours a day) — and could go even lower after that.

New method to build microgrids based on solar, hydrogen

Source: https://www.pv-magazine.com/2021/01/11/new-method-to-build-microgrids-based-on-solar-hydrogen/

The use of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells as backup power generation in solar microgrids could drive down costs and improve efficiency, according to an international group of researchers. They have proposed a new energy management system that could be ideal for hybrid solar-hydrogen microgrids in remote locations.
An international research team has developed a new energy management strategy to help manage oversupply in remote solar microgrids that rely on hydrogen fuel cells for backup power generation.

Switching From Diesel to Electric Will Seriously Affect the Grid

Source: https://www.motorbiscuit.com/switching-from-diesel-to-electric-will-seriously-affect-the-grid/

The age of the electric semi fleet is drawing near. However, we aren’t quite there yet. In fact, there are many details concerned with the adaption from the traditional diesel engine to electric trucking. It turns out that the transition from diesel to electric tractors for a cargo fleet is a massive undertaking. Switching from diesel to electric is more complicated than you may have thought.

Electric truck sales in US predicted to soar to 54,000 by 2025

Source: https://thedriven.io/2020/08/14/electric-truck-sales-in-us-predicted-to-soar-to-54000-by-2025/

There were only 2,000 electric trucks on US roads at the end of 2019, but new research from analysts Wood Mackenzie suggest that number will soar to more than 54,000 by 2025.
The new analysis from US-based energy analysts Wood Mackenzie suggests the US electric truck industry will immediately benefit from recent policy and financial support and global energy transition goals, driving significant growth in the near-term.

Study Finds U.S. Electric Truck Sales Will Rise Exponentially By 2025

Source: https://insideevs.com/news/438937/study-electric-trucks-exponential-increase-2025/amp/

The electric truck segment will gain several brand new and very interesting models in the next year or two. This influx of new metal will spur the EV truck segment on considerably, and according to a study by analysts from Wood Mackenzie, we should prepare for an exponential rise in the number of such vehicles on the road.

Charging Infrastructure for Commercial Electric Trucks lags C02 Targets

Source: https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127733_charging-infrastructure-for-commercial-electric-trucks-lags-co2-targets-report-finds

Electric commercial trucks are getting more attention, with Tesla and more established truck makers like Volvo and Daimler unveiling electric models. But, in Europe at least, charging infrastructure for these vehicles is underdeveloped, according to a new report.
A “massive ramp-up” in charging infrastructure is needed to meet European CO2 emissions targets for 2025 and 2030, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), a trade group representing 16 vehicle manufacturers, said.

Automated Trucks Are Coming Much Sooner Than You Think

Source: https://interestingengineering.com/automated-trucks-are-coming-much-sooner-than-you-think

This trial was a key milestone because all the other companies that are conducting driverless tests made sure to have at least one human in the car during the ride. While this might sound like a fun and exciting futuristic development, it does have one group of people worried: truck drivers.
I wasn’t aware ’til I ran across one on the Florida Turnpike and that just– it just scares me. I can’t imagine. But I didn’t know anything about it, truck driver Linda Allen told 60 minutes.
The other truck drivers also interviewed by 60 minutes explained that no one in their industry talks about the new autonomous trucks, leaving them unaware of how advanced the technology has become.

Global Electric Bus Adoption to Triple by 2025

Source: https://www.woodmac.com/our-expertise/focus/Power–Renewables/ebus-landscape-2019/?utm_source=gtmarticle&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=wmpr_ebus2019

In the last decade, policymakers around the world have offered incentives to transit authorities and school districts in the form of direct and partial funding, credits and long-term mandates. The incentives promote electric buses and increase the industry’s exposure to the technology as costs continue to come down. These policies have made the greatest dent in China, which hosts nearly 400,000 e-buses and accounts for 98% of the global e-bus stock. North America and Europe are piloting and testing equipment, but also have significant heavy-duty clean transportation targets beyond 2020. This report provides forecasts for e-bus and e-bus charging infrastructure sales, the e-bus and charging competitive landscape, and current market size for China, Europe and North America.

Device could bring both solar power and clean water to millions

Source: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2019/jul/09/device-bring-both-solar-power-clean-water-to-millions?utm_term=RWRpdG9yaWFsX0dyZWVuTGlnaHQtMTkwNzEy&utm_source=esp&utm_medium=Email

A device that can produce electricity from sunlight while simultaneously purifying water has been produced by researchers, an invention they say could solve two problems in one stroke.
The researchers say the device is not only a source of green energy but also offers an alternative to current technologies for purifying water. These, they add, often consume large amounts of electricity and require infrastructure beyond the reach of many communities that lack basic access to safe drinking water – a situation thought to affect more than 780 million people worldwide.

Self-driving trucks begin mail delivery test for U.S. Postal Service

Source: https://mobile-reuters-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKCN1SR0YB?amp_js_v=a2&amp_gsa=1

The U.S. Postal Service on Tuesday started a two-week test transporting mail across three Southwestern states using self-driving trucks, a step forward in the effort to commercialize autonomous vehicle technology for hauling freight.
San Diego-based startup TuSimple said its self-driving trucks will begin hauling mail between USPS facilities in Phoenix and Dallas to see how the nascent technology might improve delivery times and costs. A safety driver will sit behind the wheel to intervene if necessary and an engineer will ride in the passenger seat.
If successful, it would mark an achievement for the autonomous driving industry and a possible solution to the driver shortage and regulatory constraints faced by freight haulers across the country.
